El realizador Alex Gibney consiguió el permiso para realizar un documental con motivo del regreso a la competición de Lance Armstrong en 2009, para ganar el que sería su octavo Tour de Francia. Allí se encontró compitiendo contra su propio compañero de equipo, Alberto Contador, la sombra del dopaje que negaba, y las declaraciones de antiguos compañeros que lo acusaban. Cuatro años después se destapaba todo.
