El rancho familiar de Catherine "Cat" Balou (Jane Fonda) se ve amenazado por la inminente llegada del ferrocarril. La joven maestra de escuela, empeñada en conservar sus raíces, busca la ayuda de Kid Shelleen (Lee Marvin), pero descubre que es el pistolero más borracho de todo el Oeste.
